〜なくてはならない

ENMust do (formal variant - same as いけない)

JA「〜なくては ならない」で、しなければ ならない こと、と いいます。「行か なくては なりません」。

Explanation

Formal-written register variant of the obligation paradigm. Negative-て + は + ならない, literally 'not doing won't become (acceptable)', idiomatically 'must do'. Dominant in legal text, government notices, written instructions. Spoken-register counterpart: 〜なくてはいけない (いけない); conditional-frame: 〜ないといけない; casual contractions: 〜なくちゃ / 〜なきゃ.

Common mistakes

✗ 行かないと ならない。
✓ 行かなくては ならない。 / 行かないと いけない。
〜と pairs with いけない, not ならない. Mismatch: 〜なくては + ならない/いけない (both OK); 〜ないと + いけない (only).
✗ しゅくだいを しなくは ならない。
✓ しゅくだいを しなくては ならない。
Obligation: V-ない (drop い + くて) + は + ならない. The form しなくは skips the て-step. Full derivation: する → しない → しなくて → しなくては + ならない.
✗ しゅくだいを しないと ならない。
✓ しゅくだいを しなくては ならない。
Obligation 〜なくてはならない: V-ない + くて + は + ならない. Don't substitute と for くては — those are different constructions (〜ないといけない uses と + いけない).

Register variants — both forms are correct

These forms differ in register, formality, or pragmatic context — not in grammaticality. Pick by context.

informal-polite — だめです, more colloquial たべなくては だめです。
formal — なりません, standard written/business closer たべなくては なりません。
Both forms express obligation and are grammatical. だめです is more conversational; なりません is the standard formal closer used in business or written register.

Wrong / corrected pairs

✗ たべないて はならない。
✓ たべなくては ならない。
Negative is なくて, not ないて.
✗ たべなくては なります。
✓ たべなくては なりません。
なる + ません (negative) = obligation. Positive なります changes meaning.
