ENBeautifying / honorific prefixes

JA「お〜／ご〜」は ことばの 前に つけて、ていねいな いいかたを つくります。お は やまとことばに つけます：お花、お水。

Explanation

お/ご prefixes add politeness or are required for some words (おちゃ, ごはん). お for native Japanese; ご for Sino-Japanese (kanji-compound) words.

Common mistakes

電話 takes the お- prefix (おでんわ), not ご-; お- goes with native (wago) readings, ご- with Sino-Japanese (kango) ones.

お-honorific prefix elevates the noun's politeness (お茶, お水, お金, お時間). Dropping お for items where it's expected (especially お茶) sounds abrupt in service contexts. Adult/polite register uses お consistently for these tradition-marked nouns.
