EN〜に / から 〜を もらいます - receive (from) (に for personal givers, から for institutional sources)

JA「〜に／から〜を もらいます」で、人から ものを もらう ことを いいます。「友だちから 本を もらいました」。

Explanation

もらう = receive. Giver marked with に (or から for non-person sources). Recipient is the subject.

Common mistakes

✗ わたしから 友だちに 本を もらいました。
✓ ともだちに 本を もらいました。 / ともだちが 本を くれました。
Context: when meaning 'a friend gave it to me'. もらう has the receiver as the topic. To put the giver first, use くれる instead.
✗ ともだちが 本を もらいました。
✓ ともだちに 本を もらいました。
もらう takes FROM-PERSON marked by に (or から) and OBJECT marked by を. ともだちが would put the friend in subject position — but the speaker is the subject (implicit わたしは). Pattern: [I]は + [giver]に/から + [object]を + もらう.
✗ ともだちに 本を もらうました。
✓ ともだちに 本を もらいました。
Group 1 verb もらう: ます-form drops final う, adds い-row + ます → もらいます → past もらいました. The form もらうました wrongly keeps the dict-form う.

Register variants — both forms are correct

These forms differ in register, formality, or pragmatic context — not in grammaticality. Pick by context.

neutral polite — もらう, standard form せんせいに プレゼントを もらいました。
humble (謙譲) — いただく + から marks the elevated giver せんせいから プレゼントを いただきました。
Both forms are grammatical. もらう is the neutral receiving-verb; いただく is the humble equivalent used when the giver is socially elevated (teacher, senior, customer).

Wrong / corrected pairs

✗ ともだちに ほんを あげました。
✓ ともだちに/から ほんを もらいました。
Context: intent: I received from friend. もらう = receive; あげる = give. Direction matters.
✗ ともだちで ほんを もらいました。
✓ ともだちから ほんを もらいました。
Source of receiving = から or に, not で.
