Common mistakes
✗ りんごは いくらですか。
✓ りんごは いくつ ありますか。
Context: asking quantity. いくら asks price; いくつ asks count of objects (no fixed counter).
✗ かぞくは なんにん ですか。
✓ かぞくは なんにん いますか。
For people-count, pair with います (animate existence verb).
✗ りんごは なんまい ありますか。
✓ りんごは いくつ ありますか。
Choose counter by object type: いくつ for round/3D objects (apples, eggs); なんまい for flat objects (paper, photos); なんにん for people; なんぼん for cylindrical (bottles, pens). For apples, use いくつ.
Wrong / corrected pairs
✗ なんにん ひと きました か。
✓ なんにん きましたか。
Counter なんにん is itself "how many people"; do not add ひと again.
✗ ほんを なんまい ありますか。
✓ ほんは なんさつ ありますか。
Books use counter さつ (なんさつ); まい is for flat thin items (paper, plates).
✗ いくつ ねこが いますか。
✓ なんびき ねこが いますか。
For animals use ひき/ぴき; いくつ is for objects (counter つ).
