Explanation
ませんか is a polite invitation: 'won't you / shall we (do X)?'. It's softer than ましょう and gives the listener room to decline.

Common mistakes
✗ たべますか。
✓ たべませんか。
Context: when inviting. ますか asks a yes/no question ('do you eat?'); ませんか extends an invitation. Different intent.
✗ いっしょに ばんごはんを たべましょう。
✓ いっしょに ばんごはんを たべませんか。
ませんか = 'won't you...?' / 'why don't we...?' — POLITE INVITATION offering listener a choice. ましょう = 'let's' — assumes the listener will join. For a more polite invitation, ませんか.

Polite invitation 〜ませんか attaches DIRECTLY to V-stem. Don't add ない/なく — ません already carries the negative form. Pattern: V-stem + ませんか (= 'won't you...?' invitation).
Wrong / corrected pairs
✗ いきます か。
✓ いきませんか。
Context: intent: would you like to go. Polite invitation uses negative form ませんか ("won't you...?"); positive ますか is a yes/no fact-question.
✗ いきませんでしたか。
✓ いきましょうか。
Past invitation is NOT ませんでしたか — that asks about a past event ('didn't you go?'). For 'shall we go (now/together)?' use the volitional ましょうか. ませんか / ましょうか both invite; the PAST form of ませんか shifts to question-about-past, not past-invitation.
✗ いっしょに たべませんか?
✓ いっしょに たべませんか。
Use 。 not ?; question-mark is not standard in formal Japanese (though acceptable casually).
