JA「なんようび」は ようびを ききます。月よう日・火よう日 など、7つの ようびから ききます。
Explanation
Counter ようび = 'day of the week'. なんようび asks 'what day?'. The 7 answers: 月・火・水・木・金・土・日 ようび (getsu / ka / sui / moku / kin / do / nichi-youbi).

Common mistakes
✗ 何日ですか。
✓ 何曜日ですか。
何日 (なんにち) asks for the date (the 5th, the 12th); 何曜日 (なんようび) asks for the day of the week (Monday, Tuesday). These are different questions and the readings differ. Beginners often write 何日 when they mean 'what day of the week'.
✗ きょうは なんようびすか。
✓ きょうは なんようびですか。
Standard question particle structure: NOUN + ですか. Don't drop the で — even though なんようび ends in び (a kana), it still needs です + か as a full predicate. Pattern: NOUN + です + か.
Register variants — both forms are correct
These forms differ in register, formality, or pragmatic context — not in grammaticality. Pick by context.
confirmation-seeker (〜ね) きょうは なんようびですね。
neutral question (〜か) きょうは なんようびですか。
Both ね-ending and か-ending are grammatical. The choice is PRAGMATIC, not grammatical: ね seeks confirmation from a listener who is presumed to share the speaker's view ('it's X, right?'); か is a neutral question ('is it X?'). Neither is wrong; pick based on the speaker's pragmatic stance.
