Common mistakes
✗ どうして来ますか。
✓ どうして来ましたか。 / なぜ来ましたか。
どうして / なぜ ask for reasons about events that have already happened (past) or about general facts (present), not about future intentions. For 'why are you coming?' use 何のために or rephrase. Beginners default どうして to all tenses.
✗ どうして 来ませんでしたよ。
✓ どうして 来ませんでしたか。
Question requires か at the end (どうして... ですか). よ would change the meaning to a complaint/assertion ('you didn't come, ya know!'). For a question seeking explanation, use か.
✗ どうして きてきませんでしたか。
✓ どうして 来ませんでしたか。
Past-negative polite form: 来ませんでした (drop ます, add ませんでした). The form きてきません is wrong — it conflates te-form (来て) with the polite negative. Pattern: V-stem + ませんでした.

どうして takes no particle. Just どうして + Q.
✗ なぜか ですか。
✓ なぜですか。 / どうしてですか。
Context: intent: why. なぜ alone is "why"; なぜか means "for some reason" (different meaning).
