Explanation
The 'where' member of the kosoado-location series, isolated for question-word indexing. Full series treatment at ここ／そこ／あそこ／どこ / ここ / そこ / あそこ / どこ. どこ takes the same particles as the statement forms ここ / そこ / あそこ (に, で, から, まで) and pairs with sentence-final か to form 'where' questions.

Common mistakes
✗ 銀行はどこですか。
✓ 銀行はどこにありますか。
Beginners conflate どこですか (asking the place name / identification) with どこにありますか (asking where it exists / for directions). When you need directions, use にある; when you're identifying which place it is, use です.
✗ あそこは としょかんです。
✓ ここは としょかんです。
When introducing the location speaker is at, ここ (near speaker). For a place far from both, あそこ. The example shows speaker pointing out where they are — ここ.

✓ ここは としょかんですか。
Single です + か is the standard question pattern. Don't double the copula. Pattern: TOPIC + は + NOUN + ですか. 'ですですか' is structurally wrong (double copula).
Register variants — both forms are correct
These forms differ in register, formality, or pragmatic context — not in grammaticality. Pick by context.
neutral — default polite (です/ます register) どこから きましたか。
honorific (尊敬) — どちら + irassyaru どちらから いらっしゃいましたか。
Both forms are grammatical. どこから is the neutral polite form; どちらから いらっしゃいましたか uses honorific keigo (どちら + 尊敬 verb いらっしゃる) appropriate when speaking to/about a senior.
Wrong / corrected pairs
✗ どこに いきますか。
✓ どこに すんでいますか。
Context: intent: where do you live. いきます = "go (motion)"; すんでいます = "live (residence)". Different verbs for different questions.
✗ どこに あそびますか。
✓ どこで あそびますか。
Action location takes で; に would mean motion-destination.
