ENUntil / up to (a point in time or place); often paired with から
JA「まで」は おわる ところを いいます。「9時まで」「学校まで」と いいます。「から〜まで」と いっしょに よく つかいます。
Explanation
まで marks the END of a span - until a time, up to a place. Most often paired with から to mark a range: 9時から 5時まで (from 9 to 5), とうきょうから おおさかまで (from Tokyo to Osaka). Use only with nouns at N5; the までに variant ('by a deadline') is N4.

Common mistakes
✗ 5時から しごとです。
✓ 5時まで しごとです。
Context: when meaning 'until 5'. から marks the START of a span; まで marks the END. 5時から = 'from 5'; 5時まで = 'until 5'. They are opposites.
✗ あした まで に きます。
✓ あしたまでに きます。 (or simpler at N5: あしたまで に いません)
までに (by a deadline) is N4 - beyond N5 scope. At N5, use まで for a continuous span and stick to time-point に for deadlines.
✗ 5時で しごとです。
✓ 5時まで しごとです。
まで marks the ENDING point ('until 5'). It's the natural partner of から (from 9 まで 5 = from 9 until 5). で in this slot would mean 'at 5' as a static location-of-action, not 'until 5'. Use まで for the temporal endpoint.
Wrong / corrected pairs
✗ ごじまでに いきます。
✓ ごじまで います。
Context: intent: I will go until 5. まで = "up until / until"; までに = "by (deadline)". Different meanings.
✗ がっこうまでに あるきます。
✓ がっこうまで あるきます。
Distance/spatial range uses まで; までに is only for time deadlines.
✗ はちじから いつ まで べんきょうしますか。
✓ はちじから なんじまで べんきょうしますか。
Question word for "until when (clock)" is なんじまで, not いつまで for clock-time. (いつまで is general.)
